Reiki involves lying of hands on the body or near it; there can be some laws which may prohibit people in some countries. There can be legal considerations for practicing the hands-on technique and one should practice it as recommended under the Reiki guidelines. Although, there have not been any Reiki & legal issues, due to it, it is advisable to be informed and avoid any problems that may arise.

It is in the interest of Reiki also to make sure that there is no misunderstanding and clients are well aware of what it means to heal by hands. The healer should ensure consent from the client prior and then only proceed with the healing process. It is also to be made clear that Reiki does not require removing clothes or any other personal belongings. The clients should be easy and comfortable with the hands placing on them. The clients should be explained in advance the mode, working or functioning of Reiki before proceeding. Tell them the various hand positions. If they are comfortable, it is okay; otherwise you can perform the entire process without the need to touch them.

Alternatively, place your hands off three to four inches their body. In case of treating the sensitive parts or areas like genitals or breasts, seek the permission from the client to treat these areas first. Even when treating these parts, seek the client’s permission to come three to four inches close to their body. All this will enable a good rapport and avoid the issue of inappropriate touching.

Another aspect is to let your clients know well that you are not a doctor except when you actually are. The clients should be told that you will guarantee relaxation and stress reduction. It should also be made clear to those with condition that they should consult a qualified medical specialist. Inform them that many have received healing in the past and have been able to successfully overcome their emotional, physical and mental problems. Although, there is no guarantee regarding it and lot depends on the client also. The foremost thing is to be willing and receptive to what is being offered.

Do not suggest reducing or stopping any medication instructed by doctors. Let your clients be completely informed. Let them read and sign all the related information so that there is no scope for any misunderstanding or even a faint place for legal considerations.
