The word 'Reiki' is of Japanese origin which means 'life force energy'. It is pronounced as 'ray-key'. It means 'Rei' - universal and 'ki' - life force energy. The 'ki' or life force energy is known in the eastern world by the names of 'prana', 'mana', 'chi' etc. It is a holistic approach towards healing as it transcends all levels of one's being like - the physical, mental, spiritual and emotional.
The life force flows through our body via energy pathways and provides nourishment to all the cells, tissues and organs of the body. When this flow gets obstructed, the body organs parts function at lesser level. The organs stop functioning at their optimum levels. This life force is a direct consequence of our negative thoughts and emotions. These negative thoughts and emotions get attached to our energy field and cause obstruction in its flow. As a result, there is body-mind imbalance and illness. This imbalance can be due to many factors in our lives like emotional trauma, high stress lifestyle, negative thoughts like fear, worry, anger, doubt, depression, anxiety, suppressed emotions etc.
True health is the result of fine blend of different aspects of our existence. For good health, our entire being should be in harmony and balance and it is not just about the absence of disease. It all begins with the want to be healthy. We must have the strong wish to be and remain healthy, and Reiki does exactly that. It allows us to become a complete whole and is not limited to physical healing. Reiki empowers you and allows you to be in control of your life through good health and overall well-being.
Reiki is helpful in all kinds of health problems including back problems, sports injuries and any other serious illness. It also works wonders for healing oneself off stress, depression, weight loss or gain and a number of emotional disorders. So, it is a simple but powerful way to enhance the vibrations of your energy and helps you during emotional transition. It does not involve any invasive treatment and never causes harms to anybody.
It combines very well with other health and medical therapies. In fact, it is being increasingly used together with modern therapies like allopathy, and is springing up great results for patients. Apart, it can be used with other therapies like Ayurved and Homeopathy to work wonders. Reiki is concerned with any religion and can be practised independent of any belief system and it simply involves channelizing of energy by the practitioner through hands.

In Reiki, there is no need for diagnosis as Reiki does it on its own. A practitioner or healer only has to streamline positive energy to heal the sufferer. He or she is only a medium for the energy to flow through to the patient's body. It is only about empowering or strengthening the patient to heal himself or herself. It is not an alternative to medical treatment.
History of Reiki
For detailed history of Reiki read "Reiki, The Healing Touch", Rand, William. Southfield, MI: Vision Publications, 1991.
One of the healing systems includes the Usui System of Reiki founded by Dr. Mikao Usui, of Japan. He was born on august 15, 1865 in Yago village of Yamagata district of Gifu prefecture. He is believed to be from a rich family because only the rich in Japan could afford school in those days.
Popularly known by the name "Usui Sensei" by his students, he was keen in academics and went to Europe and China for continuing education and later on became a successful businessman. He studied medicine, psychology and religion and became the secretary to the Mayor of Tokyo, Pei Gotoushin who was earlier the head of the department of health and welfare.
But it was not same all through. Usui began experiencing a decline in personal and business spheres around year 1914. But being an avid spiritualist, he went to the holy mountain of Mt. Kurama and enrolled himself in the 21-day spiritual enlightenment course, Isyu Guo.
The routine there involved fasting, meditation, chanting of prayers etc. Although, it is not known what exactly he did there but it is held by Japanese Reiki Masters that he probably participated in meditation under a small waterfall where people go there even now to meditate.
The process involves standing underneath the fall and allow the water to fall over the top of the head which is believed to energize or activate the crown chakra. All this had a miraculous effect on him as he discovered that now he could impart healing to others without experiencing a decline in his own energy levels.
